Schools wrap up 1996-97

Sumter Catholic High School holds last graduation

SUMTER — Graduation is always a special occasion for a high school, but the 1997 commencement exercises for The Sumter Catholic High School were historical. The Class of ’97 is the last class that will ever graduate from the school. Sumter Catholic has been closed by the Diocese of Charleston.

Staff and students and alumni held an official closing ceremony in front of the Council Street school June 5, and then graduated their last senior class in ceremonies at The Opera House that evening. The Baccalaureate Mass was celebrated at St. Anne Church on the day before.

Twenty-four men and women received high school diplomas during the last commencement exercises at The Sumter Catholic School. Members of the last graduating class were:
