Msgr. Sam R. Miglarese, former vicar general, will go on a nine-month sabbatical
CHARLESTON — On Feb. 2, Bishop David B. Thompson announced the appointment of Msgr. James A. Carter Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese of Charleston effective March 1. Msgr. Carter succeeds Msgr. Sam R. Miglarese who has served in those positions for the past eight years.
“Msgr. Carter’s knowledge of the inner workings of the Curia and the Synod process will allow a smooth transition from Msgr. Miglarese’s tenure,” Bishop Thompson said. “I am confident Msgr. Carter will continue unabated the momentum of the renewal set in motion by the Synod.”
In a letter of appointment Bishop Thompson thanked Msgr. Carter for accepting the appointment and wrote, “Be assured not only of my support and gratitude but of my prayers.”
At the Bishop’s request, Msgr. Carter will continue as Vicar for Clergy in charge of the Personnel Committee and Pastor of Christ Our King in Mount Pleasant.
Msgr. Miglarese, who remains pastor of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, will begin a nine-month sabbatical March 1, in accord with diocesan policy. In a letter to Bishop Thompson, Msgr. Miglarese wrote that he was submitting his resignation as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia after reflection and thoughtful consideration, and with Bishop Thompson’s support and understanding.
“It has been an extraordinary privilege to minister with Bishop Thompson in the service of the Church of Charleston, and I leave with a deep sense of satisfaction that I have given my all to the renewal of our local Church,” Msgr. Miglarese said. “I leave with a heart full of gratitude: to God for his countless blessings, and to Bishop Thompson for his many personal and professional expressions of confidence and support.”
In a letter to Msgr. Miglarese accepting his resignation Bishop Thompson wrote, “You have contributed mightily to the work of God in the Diocese of Charleston, and your period of rest and renewal is richly deserved. May I also express my own gratitude for your service on my Curia and for the many accomplishments that have marked your tenure.”
