CHARLESTON — Father William A. Maley, a priest of the Diocese of Charleston, died Sept. 22.
A wake was held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Burial will be in Pennsylvania.
He was ordained just five years ago, after enjoying a successful 30-year business career, which brought him to Greenville. It was there that he found his calling. With support from the bishop, David B. Thompson, and the vocations director, he entered Pope John XXIII Seminary in 1993. He received his master’s of divinity from St. Vincent Seminary in the late ’80s, so his ordination date came two years after entering Pope John XXIII.
On Dec. 16, 1995, Deacon Maley became a priest. He was assigned to St. Anthony’s in Florence as an associate pastor and to the missions in Dillon and Marion as a sacramental priest. He was later assigned as pastor to St. Mary the Virgin Mother Parish in Hartsville and St. Joseph Mission in Darlington.
Father Maley was born on Aug. 19, 1942, in Danville, Pa.; his brother and sister still live in the state; his parents, John and Monica, are deceased.
Messages of condolences may be sent to his brother, John Maley, 75 Cornell Road, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004; or his sister, Monica Maley, 925 North 2nd St., Harrisburg, PA 17102.
