MOUNT PLEASANT — The East Cooper Catholic Community, which began in September of 1999 by celebrating Mass at Thomas Lynch Hall in the Dunes West subdivision, will now be called the Church of St. Benedict.
Bishop Robert J. Baker selected the name late last week from a list of several choices submitted by the parish and its pastor, Father Paul A. Brenninkmeijer.
“I was happy to select the first preference they had, as St. Benedict was the number one choice of the parishioners and the selection committee,” said Bishop Baker.
Msgr. James Carter, vicar general, said the name for the new parish carries with it much spiritual tradition.
The church currently meets for Sunday Mass at Charles Pinckney Middle School in Park West.
