Sisters of Charity Foundation awards $65,000 in grants

COLUMBIA — The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has awarded 25 Caritas Fund grants totaling $65,500 to non-profit and faith-based organizations across the state.

As a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina makes Caritas awards twice a year to non-profit and faith-based organizations reaching out to meet the immediate needs of the poor. The next Caritas Fund deadline will be in September.

The foundation is committed to helping the poor and underserved in South Carolina by addressing the root causes of poverty, nurturing the growth of healthy communities, emphasizing youth and family and measuring the outcomes of these efforts. The foundation is also undertaking an innovative Fatherhood Initiative to strengthen South Carolina families, and an After School Initiative designed to enhance children’s learning and well-being.

Following are some of the organizations that received 2006 Caritas Fund grants, their project titles, grant amounts, and the county or counties they serve:

Greater Spartanburg Ministries; Food Pantry Renovation and Restocking; $3,000; Spartanburg County.

Interfaith Hospitality Network of York County; Essential Guest Expenses; $2,000; York County.

Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South

Carolina; Pee Dee Indian; $3,000; Marlboro County.

St. Joseph Conference St. Vincent de Paul Society; Housing Expenses Assistance for the Needy of Columbia; $3,000; Richland County.

St. Philip the Apostle Church; St. Philip Outreach; $3,000; Florence County.

St. Theresa, The Little Flower Church/St. Vincent de Paul Society; Last Resort for the Poor and Needy; $3,000; Dorchester and Charleston counties.
