MONCKS CORNER — The public is invited to join the Brothers of Mepkin Abbey for “A Celebration of Place,” a community celebration and dedication honoring the abbey’s African heritage. The event will be on Labor Day, Sept. 4.
“A Celebration of Place” will feature the presentation of a painting by renowned lowcountry artist Jonathan Green, commemorating the slave burial ground at Mepkin Abbey. A wrought-iron gate created by master ironworker Philip Simmons will be presented to Mepkin Abbey for the burial ground.
Members of the public are invited to bring their own picnics. Ice cream, soft drinks and entertainment will be provided by Mepkin Abbey.
“A Celebration of Place” will also include historical recollection, gospel music by Marlena Smalls and the Hallelujah Singers, and choirs from local churches.
For the past 50 years the monks of Mepkin Abbey have made it a place for contemplation and renewal. This Labor Day event will be a day of remembrance and renewal of the spirit, as well as a day of celebration and inspiration through the arts.
