Elaine Addison, Cardinal Bernardin’s sister, dies at 73

MARIETTA, Ga. — Elaine Bernardin Addison, the younger sister of the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, died Sept. 23 at her home. She was 73.

Addison was born in Columbia, S.C., a daughter of the late Joseph and Maria Bernardin. She was a graduate of St. Peter School and Cardinal Newman High School and attended the University of South Carolina. She worked and volunteered at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, who served as an auxiliary bishop under Cardinal Bernardin, celebrated a Mass Sept. 26 at St. Joseph Church in Marietta. Msgr. Kenneth Velo, longtime friend and aide of Cardinal Bernardin, celebrated a funeral Mass Sept. 27 at St. Joseph Church in Columbia. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens in Columbia.

Addison was very close to her older brother, and after his death she traveled around the United States to accept posthumous awards honoring him.

Addison is survived by her husband, James; two sons, James Jr. and Joseph; two daughters, Anna Maria Hatfield and Angela Renee Haddad; and nine grandchildren.
