Father Edward Mullen, a priest for 35 years, dies at age 82

CHARLESTON — Father Edward F. Mullen, a retired priest of the Diocese of Charleston living at St. Joseph’s Residence, died Jan. 23. He was 82.

Edward Francis Mullen was born on Dec. 17, 1925, in New York, N.Y., a son of Matthew and Margaret Boyle Mullen.

He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School; St. Jerome College in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada; and Manhattan College in New York City.

He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary and College in Yonkers, N.Y., and St. Bernard Seminary in St. Bernard, Ala.

Father Mullen was incardinated to the Diocese of Charleston on Dec. 11, 1956, and ordained into the priesthood on May 17, 1958, by Bishop John J. Russell in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

In Father Mullen’s 35 years of ministry, he served assignments as an associate at St. Andrew in Myrtle Beach; Church of the Nativity in Charleston; St. Mary in Greenville; St. Peter in Beaufort; and St. Anne in Sumter.

He had various assignments as administrator and pastor at St. Mary, Summerton; St. Mary, the Virgin Mother, Hartsville; Mission of St. Joseph the Worker, Darlington; St. Edward, Murphy Village; Our Lady Star of the Sea, North Myrtle Beach; St. Andrew, Myrtle Beach; Sacred Heart, Abbeville; Good Shepherd, McCormick; and St. Mary, Summerton.    
                                                                                                
Father Mullen also served as chaplain for the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy Convent from 1960-61; as chaplain for the Beaufort extension of University of South Carolina in 1966; and as moderator for the Columbia Deanery of the Catholic Youth Organization from 1967-68.

Father Mullen’s last assignment, before retirement, was as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel on Folly Beach in 1988. He retired in 1993.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 28 at St. Edward Church in Murphy Village. He was buried at Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Father Mullen is survived by a niece, Patricia Crocker, of New Jersey.
