CHARLESTON—Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone announced the appointment Jan. 19 of Sister Sandra A. Makowski, SSMN, J.C.L., as the chancellor for the Diocese of Charleston.
She replaces Father Edward W. Fitzgerald who has been made director of diaconate formation. Her appointment is effective Jan. 25.
Sister Sandra is a Sister of St. Mary of Namur who originally hails from Binghamton, N.Y. She currently works in the diocesan tribunal as a defender of the bond, a position she also held in her former diocese in Buffalo, N.Y. A defender of the bond defends the marriage bond in marriage nullity cases.
Sister Sandra holds a bachelor of arts degree in teaching from Trinity College, a master’s in religious education from Catholic University and a license in canon law from the Catholic University, all in Washington, D.C.
She has taught numerous courses in canon law at Christ Our King Seminary in East Aurora, N.Y.
As chancellor, Sister Sandra is the official record keeper of the diocese and will handle all permissions and dispensations for marriage.
The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur motherhouse is located in Buffalo. It was founded in Namur, Belgium.
