COLUMBIA—Sister Julia Hutchison, superintendent of Catholic schools, announced that she is resigning on June 30, at the end of the fiscal year.
The Sister of Notre Dame has led the Diocese of Charleston’s school system for the past five years. She has been in education for nearly 50 years serving as teacher, principal, and in diocesan administration.
Sister Julia made the announcement at a principals’ meeting in Columbia on Jan. 27 and said she will return to her congregation’s province in Toledo, Ohio, at least temporarily.
“I have many wonderful experiences of your gracious Southern hospitality to take back up North [in] June,” she said.
The Catholic Schools Office recently launched an enrollment campaign that included placing billboards in Columbia, Greenville and Charleston. The campaign will also include public service announcements on the radio from schools in the Coastal, Midlands and Upstate Deaneries.
