He was a graduate of Catholic University with a degree in philosophy and received his master’s degree in ministry from the Graduate Theological Union.
He joined The Oratory in 1974, and was ordained a priest by Bishop Ernest L. Unterkoefler on May 25, 1976. Father David conducted retreats and missions on teaching of the scriptures.
“My favorite story from the Bible is the passage from the last chapter of Luke’s Gospel describing the journey of the two disciples to Emmaus with Jesus (Lk 24:13-35),” he said on The Oratory website. “Like a classic stained glass window, Luke’s story is full of textures, colors and images. Among them I find the key connections in my journey with The Oratory.”
He said he joined the order for its strong social justice roots, including involvement with the movement for racial equality and school integration, efforts to organize textile workers, Gospel connection to campus ministry, peacemaking and hunger issues.
Father David served as Winthrop University’s campus minister for over a decade and its Newman apostolate director. He supported the university’s peace, justice and conflict resolution studies, created in 2006, by cosponsoring programs, teaching courses and serving on the advisory committee. He was involved with Engaged Encounter, helping couples prepare for marriage since 1983.
Father David is survived by two brothers, a sister, and the Oratorian community. Messages of condolence may be sent care of Very Rev. Fabio L. Refosco, CO, The Oratory, P.O. Box 11586, Rock Hill, SC 29731. Memorial donations may be made to The Friends of the Oratory at the same address.
