Sister Roberta Bridgeman, OLMCHARLESTON—Sister Marie Roberta Bridgeman, a Sister of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, died at May Forest, the congregation’s motherhouse, on Sept. 4. She was 95. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at the order’s chapel and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Sister Roberta was born Mary Bridgeman on March 30, 1915, to Robert A. and Isabelle F. Lynch Bridgeman. She was a graduate of St. Angela Academy in Aiken, and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. She also attended Our Lady of Mercy Junior College in Charleston, Pius X School of Music in New York, Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., and The Citadel in Charleston.

Sister Roberta entered the convent on Aug. 15, 1932. She professed her first vows on June 11, 1935, and final vows Aug. 15, 1949.

She was a professional educator teaching at the Cathedral, St. Patrick, and Sacred Heart schools in Charleston, and at St. Mary School in Greenville. She specialized in piano and organ.

Sister Roberta served as principal at St. Joseph School in Charleston, Christ Our King/Stella Maris School in Mount Pleasant, and Our Lady of Mt. Virgin School in Middlesex, N.J. She also served on school boards, parish councils, and the board of directors of Divine Savior Hospital and Nursing Home in York.

She was the director of novices for her religious congregation from 1961-1970, and vicar general and member of the general council from 1980-1984. She served as assistant coordinator of the motherhouse from 1988-1996, and was the coordinator in local convents in Middlesex, Mount Pleasant and Greenville. Sister Roberta is survived by her community.
