Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone has grown to understand the schools and culture of the diocese over the past two years and has good things to say about the Catholic education system.
He said it is important to look at the schools as a continuously evolving story of past, present and future.
If one were to look at the present day only, with a population squeezed by economic burdens, then it might seem prudent to talk about consolidating schools and halting plans for expansion.
But Bishop Guglielmone said that would be a mistake.
“We don’t want to limit our access to Catholic schools in a difficult time,” he said.
The economy will improve, he continued, and if the diocese closed schools now, it could find itself with more applicants than it could accommodate. The bishop said they never want to turn anyone away from a Catholic education.
He said it is also important to look at each school in terms of what it provides the community because, whether small or large, they all serve a niche.
This is one reason finding the right person to fill the role of diocesan superintendent is so essential.
Bishop Guglielmone said they need someone who is positive, energetic and understands the way schools in the diocese work.
“We need a spirit of hopefulness and a spirit of enthusiasm that will encourage people to use our schools,” he said.
Sister Canice Adams, SSCM, and Jacqualine Kasprowski, both principals of their own schools, serve as interim superintendents with Sandra Leatherwood as assistant.
Leatherwood said their primary goal right now is to finish the process for diocesan accreditation.
All of the diocesan schools have participated, along with St. Francis Xavier High School in Sumter, which is private.
Leatherwood said the private schools had the option of participation.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will visit in April 2012 to render their decision.
One area the diocese should have no trouble with is Catholicity.
Bishop Guglielmone said all of the schools are strong at teaching academic subjects through a Catholic perspective, and he sees the fruits of this during the rite of confirmation.
“Our young people are very well prepared. They have a good grasp of the faith,” he said.
He hopes the seniors who just graduated from the state’s four Catholic high schools will take what they’ve learned and allow that formation to guide the way they deal with the world.
If plans go accordingly, the diocese will have two more high schools in the future. Bishop Guglielmone said fundraising is underway for secondary schools in the Myrtle Beach and Bluffton areas.
The bishop attended each of the graduations to offer words of encouragement and congratulations.
