Be prepared for hurricane season

South Carolinians are keeping a weather eye out for hurricanes now that we’ve had our first near miss of the season.

And even though Hurricane Irene seems to be veering away from the Palmetto state, residents are still advised to have a disaster plan and supplies in place. The Diocese of Charleston can help with that. Just visit the Catholic Charities webpage for a detailed disaster response plan.

It has a ton of useful information for the state, including an evacuation map. The plan also contains a list of things each family should do before a disaster strikes, such as planning where to go and how to get there.

People should know how to secure their homes if they leave, and how to remain safe if they stay.

One of the top priorities is to create an emergency preparedness kit with items such as a battery-powered radio and flashlight with fresh batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water, and more.

Also, go to the National Hurricane Center for a tracking map and storm information.

Hurricane Prayer

Our Father in Heaven, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor and Saint Jude, spare us from all harm during this hurricane season, and protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature. Our Lady of Prompt Succor and Saint Jude hasten to help us. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen
