Deacon Wodecki’s ordination nears, two seminarians achieve candidacy/ministry

CHARLESTON—The Diocese of Charleston will receive a Christmas gift in the priestly ordination of Deacon Filip Wodecki on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad St.

Parish groups, especially youth, are encouraged to attend, according to Father Jeffrey F. Kirby, diocesan vicar for vocations.

Deacon Wodecki recently completed his studies at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Detroit.

He is originally from Zawiercie, Poland, and transferred to the Diocese of Charleston from the Diocese of Venice, Fla.

Two other men have moved closer to their ordinations.

Renaurd West was one of 21 seminarians at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., to receive candidacy to holy orders at Mass Nov. 11. It was celebrated by Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski of Baltimore.

West’s home parish is Stella Maris Church on Sullivan’s Island.

He is in his third year of theology. This is his final step on the way to diaconate ordination and the point when he formally declares his intention to become a priest and when he is publicly accepted by the church into the ranks of the candidates for holy orders.

Seminarian Javier Heredia and his classmates at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass., received the ministry of lector on Nov. 1.

He is now able to proclaim the Scriptures at Mass.

Heredia is in his second year of theology, and belongs to St. John of the Cross Church in Batesburg-Leesville.
