JAMES ISLAND—The Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy held their general chapter meeting on April 15 to elect new officers for their community.
Sister Mary Joseph Ritter was chosen as the new general superior. Currently, she serves as director of the Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Services on Johns Island.
Sister Bridget Sullivan is the current general superior and will remain in that position until July, when new officers are sworn in, Sister Mary Joseph said.
The sisters also elected three new council members. They are Sister Ann Billard, first councilor; Sister Veronica Janas, second councilor; and Sister Carol Wentworth, third councilor.
Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone celebrated Mass with members of the diocesan order. The Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy were formed by Bishop John England in 1829.
