The Diocese of Charleston’s bi-weekly newspaper received eight honors, with three in first place, at the 2013 Catholic Media Conference award ceremony held June 21 in Denver, Colo.
In the category for best feature writing in a newspaper with a circulation of 17,001 to 40,000, staff writer Amy Wise Taylor won first place for her article on “Noshing with the pope”.
Miscellany newcomer, graphic designer Caroline Nelson, won first place for best use of art or graphics for the “Give something special this Christmas” center spread, and editor Deirdre Mays won first place for best photo illustration for the shot of “Marriage: In good times and bad, in sickness and health.”
Doug Deas, longtime Miscellany freelance photographer, won second place for his “More than Worship” photo in the best coverage of religious liberty issues photo category and third place for best multiple-picture package for religious liberty with the “Rise up for freedom” center spread.
Staff writer Christina Lee Knauss won an honorable mention in best reporting on a special age group, children, for the article “Easing first day of school woes”. She and Taylor received an honorable mention for best coverage of religious liberty issues for the article “HHS mandates contraception/sterilization coverage”.
Taylor also won an honorable mention in the best coverage of vocations to the priesthood, religious life or diaconate for her story, “Franciscan sisters to move on after 25 years in Beaufort”.
The articles and photos were published in 2012. They are submitted by newspapers across the country who are members of the Catholic Press Association. Judging was performed by the journalism schools of Marquette University and Spring Hill College.
