Student athletes commit to play

CN soccer team rocks academics
COLUMBIA—For the third year in a row, the Cardinal Newman men’s and women’s soccer teams have earned The National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award. This is the sixth straight year for the men’s team and the third for the women’s. Cardinal Newman was the only school in SCISA to earn the dual honors. To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25.
Wise earns finalist spot
GREENVILLE—Alexandria Wise, a senior at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, has been named a finalist in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program. She is the daughter of Scott and Narica Wise of Simpsonville and a member of St. Mary Magdalene Church.
Moore, Boykin break 1,000 points
CHARLESTON—Mary Harriet Moore, a student at Bishop England High School, was named the 2AA State Volleyball Player of the Year. Also, Mary Harriet and Michele Boykin, both on the school basketball team, surpassed the 1,000-point mark in their basketball careers. Both girls were named to the Carolina Invitational Basketball Tournament All- Tournament Team recently.
Schools announce Junior Scholars
DIOCESE—The South Carolina Junior Scholars Program identifies eighth grade students with exceptional academic talent. The following schools have posted a list of their Junior Scholars: Blessed Sacrament 5; Charleston Catholic 5; Christ Our King/Stella Maris 16; Divine Redeemer 2; John Paul II 10; St. Andrew 8; St. Anne in Rock Hill 4; St. Anthony in Florence 4; St. Joseph in Anderson 1; St. Michael 8; St. Paul the Apostle 5; St. Peter in Beaufort 2; Summerville Catholic 3; and Cardinal Newman 28.
Scouts can win scholarships
DIOCESE—The National Catholic Committee on Scouting is offering five scholarships to seniors who have earned either their Eagle badge or Silver award and have received their Ad Altare Dei and/or Pope Pius XII badges.
