Trappist Father Feliciano Manalili dies at age 81

MONCKS CORNER—Father Feliciano Manalili, of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, died on June 24 at Mepkin Abbey. He was 81.
The Mass of Christian Burial and interment were held at the abbey on July 1.
Father Manalili was born in San Pedro Camuning, in the province of Pampanga, Philippines, on April 13, 1933.
He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Manila on Feb. 10, 1962.
He had a long ministry in education serving as a director of Our Lady of Peace School in the Diocese of Antipolo, and was a professor of logic, English, epistemology, and Latin at the Royal and Conciliar San Carlos Seminary in Makati City, from which he graduated.
Father Manalili also served appointments as the director of the theology department and then as the academic dean of the seminary’s philosophy department.
After coming to the United States, he entered Mepkin Abbey in December 1985 and professed his solemn vows on Jan. 1, 1997.
Father Manalili had been in monastic vows for 24 years and in priestly ministry for 52 years.
During his monastic life at Mepkin he served in various roles including novice director, prior and counselor.
Father Manalili is survived by his brothers in the Trappist community.
