National merit finalists

Schools in the diocese continue to shine, with a total of 10 high school seniors earning top-ranking, national academic honors.

Here are the eight students who were named as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program:

Angelica “Clover” Robichaud from Cardinal Newman in Columbia; Thomas Hanahan and Elizabeth Blackwood from Bishop England in Charleston; and Philip Coburn, Keyes Gilmer, Paul List, Patrick McLear and William Tierney from St. Joseph’s Catholic in Greenville.

Also, two students were named as finalists in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program. They are Charles Vandross and Tess Marshall, also from St. Joseph’s.

About 1.5 million students from more than 22,000 high schools entered the competition. They are narrowed to a pool of semifinalists representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Finalists are in the running for $2,500 towards the student’s freshman year of college.
