SC Catholics journey to Philly for World Meeting of Families

Several busloads of South Carolina residents — moms, dads, young adults, grandparents, clergy and diocesan personnel — hit the road Sept. 21 to take the long ride to Philadelphia. A group organized by the Diocese of Charleston’s Office of Family Life left from Fort Mill and arrived late that night.

In cooperation with the Offices of Family Life, Catechesis and Christian Formation, Young Adults, and Hispanic Ministry, The Miscellany is featuring daily reports, Instagram photos, Tweets, Facebook posts, videos, live coverage from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and national articles on the world meeting and on Pope Francis’s historic visit.

Reports and will come from:

Kathy Schmugge, director of the Office of Family Life for the Diocese of Charleston, who is leading the group.

Michael Martocchio, director of Catechesis and Christian Formation for the Diocese of Charleston. His wife and two daughters are attending the conference with him.

Michaela Schenkelberg is a doctoral candidate and graduate research assistant at The University of South Carolina in Columbia. She attends St. Thomas More and is active with Columbia Young Adult Catholics.

Gustavo Valdez, director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Charleston, who is also attending with his wife and children.

Karen Willoughby lives in Myrtle Beach. She is attending the World Meeting of Families with her granddaughter Kaiyla who is an eighth grader at St. Michael School in Garden City. They both are members of St. James Church in Conway.

We will also check in with some of our seminarians.
