LOUISVILLE, KY.—Ursuline Sister Patricia Marcian Lowman died at Sacred Heart Home on May 3. She was 94.
Visitation will be at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Road in Louisville, on May 12 from 2-5 p.m. and 6-7 p.m., followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 13 at 11 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with burial in St. Michael Cemetery.
Born in Orangeburg, S.C., Sister Patricia entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1940. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and a doctorate from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo.
In the Diocese of Charleston, Sister Patricia taught at St. Peter School in Columbia from 1952-55, where she was a well-loved teacher of history.
In 1966, she traveled to India where she studied as a Fulbright Scholar. In addition to her teaching ministry in South Carolina, she also taught at schools in Kentucky and Nebraska.
In later years, she was a history professor at Bellarmine-Ursuline College (now Bellarmine University) in Louisville and arranged and accompanied college students on tours of historical and cultural sites in European and Middle Eastern countries annually for several summers.
A lover of sports, Sister Patricia was the official scorekeeper of the Bellarmine women’s basketball teams for 25 years. In 2000, she was inducted into the Bellarmine University Athletic Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her niece, Carol Tessem of St. Petersburg, Fla., several great-nieces, many friends and her Ursuline Community.
