DANVILLE, PA—Sister Celeste Marie Kennerty died on June 3. She was 86.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held June 8 at Maria Hall, the motherhouse, in Danville.
Helen Louise Kennerty was born Nov. 30, 1931, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of James H. and Maude Mary Kennerty.
She attended St. Andrew and St. Patrick Schools, and was a graduate of Bishop England High School, all in Charleston. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Marywood University in Scranton.
Sister Celeste Marie entered the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Danville on Feb. 1, 1954, and was received as a novice on Aug. 11 that year. She made her first profession of vows on Aug. 1, 1956.
Sister Celeste Marie was missioned to parish schools in Bridgeport, Conn.; Gary, Ind.; and Yonkers, N.Y. In Pennsylvania she served in Danville, Swoyersville, Hazleton and Berwick. In the Diocese of Charleston, she taught in parish elementary schools and served as local coordinator, principal, assistant to the principal and administrative assistant.
From 1998 to 2001, Sister Celeste Marie worked as administrator at Maria Hall. She took up residence in the motherhouse in 2005 and served in a variety of ministries after that.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dolores Kennerty of Charleston, and her religious community.
