CHARLESTON—Bishop England High School is celebrating its fourth consecutive South Carolina Class 3A state championship in girls’ basketball.
The team won this title in spectacular fashion, with a come-from-behind fourth quarter rally and a last-second basket by Katie Cullum to top Newberry High 48-47 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.
The final two points to clinch the game came after the Bishops called timeout with just 8 seconds remaining. Josie Dennis was blocked from a drive to the basket and found Cullum wide open on the left side. The sophomore made the shot with 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Bishops were led by Rhetta Moore with 13 points and six steals. Also scoring were Christine Egede 10, Katie Brooks 9, Katie Cullum 6, Josie Dennis 4, Kelly Drummond 4, and Allie Tucker 2. Other members of the championship team are Anna Grace Miller, Kelsey Locke, Sophia Quinque, Janeya Johnson, Rebecca Locke and Kelly Perkins.
Bishop England won its first title in the 2012 season. The following year the Bishops lost in the state final, but have dominated since, winning three straight Class AA titles before moving up to Class AAA this season.
Coach Paul Runey has 661 wins in 33 years coaching girls’ basketball at BE. He’s been coaching a total of 43 years at the school and said he’ll keep doing it “as long as it’s fun.”
