Schools compete for titles, honor in youth basketball tournament

GREENVILLE—Basketball teams from Catholic schools and churches around the state met up in the Piedmont recently to compete in the Diocese of Charleston Youth Basketball Tournament.

St. Mary School, which hosted the event, dominated the leader board, winning three of the four championship titles. State titles went to St. Mary’s senior girls, junior girls, and junior boys. Christ Our King-Stella Maris from Charleston won the senior boys’ championship.

The Cinderella of the tournament was St. Michael School’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team from Murrells Inlet, which earned second-place against a dominant St. Mary. A spokesperson from the school said it is the first team from St. Michael School to reach the diocesan finals.
