Ursuline Sister Louise Marie Willenbrink, former teacher at Cardinal Newman, dies at 82

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Ursuline Sister Louise Marie Willenbrink died at Baptist Health hospital on June 21. She was 82.

A vigil service was held at the Ursuline Motherhouse on June 26. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 27 in the Motherhouse Chapel with burial in St. Michael Cemetery.  Arrangements were handled by Bosse Funeral Home.

Sister Louise Marie entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1954. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Ursuline College in Louisville in 1958, and a master’s degree in English from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1964. She also studied at Spalding University in Louisville and Trinity Washington University (then Trinity College) in Washington, D.C.

In the Diocese of Charleston, S.C., she taught English at Cardinal Newman High School in Columbia from 1963 to 1965.

Most of her years in education were spent in Louisville, where she was principal of Angela Merici High School from 1971 to 1978, and principal of Sacred Heart Academy from 1978 to 1988. She then served as a student counselor and faculty mentor at Sacred Heart Academy until her retirement in 2012. Sister Louise Marie also taught in schools in Pittsburgh; Jackson, Miss.; and Morgantown, W.Va.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Dottie, and her sister, Ruth Gonzalez, all of Louisville; and her sister, Jean Perrone of Charlotte, N.C.; plus 33 nieces and nephews, 35  great-nieces and great-nephews, a couple of great-greats , and her community of Ursuline Sisters and associates.
