CHARLESTON—Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone released the following letter to the faithful:

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
It is with a heavy heart and in the spirit of transparency and accountability that I, based on the recommendations of the independent Sexual Abuse Advisory Board of the Diocese of Charleston, release the names of those clergy who have been credibly accused of sexual misconduct or abuse involving a minor. It is my fervent hope and prayer that publishing this list will help bring healing to the victims and their families who have been so grievously harmed by the betrayal of priests and Church leadership.
The victims of sexual abuse and their families have suffered much pain and are understandably hurt and angry. We must continue to pray and care for our brothers and sisters who have experienced this trauma inflicted by priests they trusted. We also need to honor the courage of those who have come forward to share the most intimate and painful experiences of their entire lives. My heart hurts for the victims and the damage this has caused to them and to their families.
The task before the Church today is to assist in the healing of victims and to regain their trust. This regaining of trust is not only necessary for the victims, but also for all the faithful. The Church should always be a safe environment — not only a place where no one will be abused going forward, but also a place where those who have been abused in the past can find understanding, healing and hope. Let us remain steadfast in offering our prayers to God that all victims of child sexual abuse may find healing and peace.
The list of priests was compiled after a review of diocesan priest records. Every effort was made to ensure that the examination was thorough, precise and complete. Members of the independent Sexual Abuse Advisory Board then assessed and agreed on the final list of priests. It is important to note that an accusation determined by the Board to be credible is not a finding of liability or guilt; it means that the allegation at least seems to be true and/or offers reasonable grounds to be believed.
This list includes the names of those priests credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors in the Diocese dating back to 1950. It is separated into four parts:
- Priests under the direct authority of the Diocese of Charleston as to which a credible allegation of sexual misconduct or abuse has been made involving conduct within the Diocese;
- Visiting priests from another diocese and priests under the direct authority of a Religious Order, but assigned to the Diocese of Charleston, as to which a credible allegation of sexual misconduct or abuse has been made involving conduct within the Diocese;
- Priests who served in the Diocese of Charleston, with no accusations within this Diocese, but who have credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors that occurred in another jurisdiction, and
- Priests who are listed by virtue of a class action settlement payment as determined by an arbitrator
The list will be updated if new credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor are determined.
In order to experience a resurgence of holiness, we in the Church must continue to strengthen the protections provided to our children and young people in our parishes and schools. I urge you, the faithful of our Diocese, to participate in this resurgence. Trials and tribulations can often become the catalysts for tremendous strengthening to enable us to deal with the problems we face in our lives. With your help, our Church will become stronger and the crisis we now face will result in the purification of the Church.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Es con un corazón apesadumbrado y en el espíritu de transparencia y responsabilidad que yo, basado en las recomendaciones de la Junta Asesora Independiente sobre Abusos Sexuales de la Diócesis de Charleston, doy a conocer los nombres de aquellos clérigos que han sido acusados creíblemente de conducta sexual impropia o abuso sexual de un menor. Es mi ferviente esperanza y oración que la publicación de esta lista ayude a traer sanación a las víctimas y a sus familias que han sido tan gravemente dañadas por la traición de los sacerdotes y del liderazgo de la Iglesia.
Las víctimas de abuso sexual y sus familias han sufrido mucho dolor y es comprensible que estén heridas y enojadas. Debemos continuar orando y cuidando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas que han experimentado este trauma infligido por los sacerdotes en los que confiaban. También necesitamos honrar el valor de aquellos que han venido a compartir las experiencias más íntimas y dolorosas de toda su vida. Me duele el corazón por las víctimas y el daño que esto les ha causado a ellas y a sus familias.
La tarea que la Iglesia tiene hoy ante sí es ayudar a sanar a las víctimas y recuperar su confianza. Esta recuperación de la confianza es necesaria no sólo para las víctimas, sino también para todos los fieles. La Iglesia debe ser siempre un ambiente seguro —no sólo un lugar donde nadie será abusado en el futuro, sino también un lugar donde aquellos que han sido abusados en el pasado puedan encontrar comprensión, sanación y esperanza. Permanezcamos firmes en ofrecer nuestras oraciones a Dios para que todas las víctimas de abuso sexual infantil puedan encontrar sanación y paz.
La lista de sacerdotes fue compilada después de una revisión de los registros de los sacerdotes diocesanos. Se hizo todo lo posible para garantizar que el examen fuera exhaustivo, preciso y completo. Los miembros de la Junta Asesora Independiente sobre Abusos Sexuales evaluaron y acordaron la lista final de sacerdotes. Es importante señalar que una acusación que la Junta determine que es creíble no es una determinación de responsabilidad o culpabilidad; significa que la alegación al menos parece ser cierta y/o ofrece motivos razonables para creerla.
Esta lista incluye los nombres de aquellos sacerdotes acusados creíblemente de abuso sexual de menores en la Diócesis desde 1950. Se divide en cuatro partes:
- Sacerdotes bajo la autoridad directa de la Diócesis de Charleston contra quienes se ha hecho una acusación creíble de conducta sexual impropia o abuso sexual que involucra una conducta dentro de la Diócesis;
- Sacerdotes visitantes de otra diócesis y sacerdotes bajo la autoridad directa de una Orden Religiosa, pero asignados a la Diócesis de Charleston, contra quienes se ha hecho una acusación creíble de conducta sexual impropia o abuso sexual que involucra una conducta dentro de la Diócesis;
- Sacerdotes que sirvieron en la Diócesis de Charleston, sin acusaciones dentro de esta Diócesis, pero que tienen acusaciones creíbles de abuso sexual de menores que ocurrieron en otra jurisdiccion, y
Sacerdotes que figuran en la lista en virtud de un pago de acuerdo de demanda colectiva según lo determinado por un árbitro - La lista se actualizará si se determinan nuevas acusaciones creíbles de abuso sexual de un menor.
Para poder experimentar un resurgimiento de la santidad, nosotros en la Iglesia debemos continuar fortaleciendo las protecciones proporcionadas a nuestros niños y jóvenes en nuestras parroquias y escuelas. Los exhorto, fieles de nuestra Diócesis, a participar en este resurgimiento. Las pruebas y tribulaciones a menudo pueden convertirse en catalizadores de un tremendo fortalecimiento que nos permita enfrentar los problemas que enfrentamos en nuestras vidas. Con la ayuda de ustedes, nuestra Iglesia se fortalecerá y la crisis a la que nos enfrentamos ahora resultará en la purificación de la Iglesia.
