Pope statue receives blessing
KINGSTREE—A life-size statue of Blessed Pope John Paul II was donated to the Shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina – Our Lady of Joyful Hope.
It was blessed recently and will find a place of honor in the conference hall. Father Stanley Smolenski, spma, shrine director, encourages prayer to the pope.
VFW and Knights honor flag
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH—VFW Post 10804 and Knights of Columbus Assembly 2431 joined for the retirement of an American flag. The Rev. Bob Wasden, VFW chaplain, offered the invocation and final benediction and Father Bob Sayer, parochial vicar at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, offered the opening prayer.
Knights in the honor guard performed the traditional 13 folds of the flag and saluted at each fold.
St. Michael stands for freedom
GARDEN CITY—St. Michael Church held a Mass and Holy Hour recently to open the Fortnight for Freedom. Then on July 4, participants formed a Freedom Chain, standing in silent support of religious rights.
St. Paul garden helps the poor
SENECA—St. Paul the Apostle Church is growing a Victory Garden to help feed the hungry in Oconee County. Vegetables from the garden are made available to parishioners and their donations go to the Golden Corner Food Bank. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, and more are often available. Knights celebrate patriotism
PAWLEYS ISLAND—More than 350 people gathered for the Knights of Columbus annual July 4 celebration and salute to the U.S. military at Precious Blood of Christ Church. Knight Roy Elmendorf, emcee, noted it was the 237th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Bill Wichrowski, faithful navigator of Assembly 3272 and Grand Knight Don Johnston of Council 11028, presented the Patriotism Award – an American eagle wrapped in an American flag – to Rear Admiral Richard Milligan, retired U.S. Navy, for his long and distinguished service to our country.
