Oratory schedules Annual Cardinal Newman Lecture

ROCK HILL — Sister Miriam Therese Winter will be the guest speaker for the 18th Annual Cardinal Newman Lecture The Oratory is hosting on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Pope John Center in Rock Hill.

The Oratory opens this event to all without charge as an annual gift to the church of the region and as a tribute to Cardinal John Henry Newman, 19th century scholar and Oratory priest. Sister Miriam Therese is a member of the Medical Mission Sisters with special gifts in music and liturgy. She currently serves on the faculty of Hartford Seminary in Connecticut.

The morning session of the Newman Lecture begins at 10 a.m. with Sister Miriam Therese’s lecture entitled: “Feminist and Catholic: Is it impossible to be both?” which will explore assumptions and misunderstandings about tradition and feminism through one woman’s story.

After mid-day Eucharist and break for brown bag lunch, Sister Miriam will address the role of women in the Church in the new millennium in her talk, “Women and the Future of the Church.” Through examining women’s leadership in the biblical tradition participants might affirm current ministries and prepare for the future.
