COLUMBIA — Father Benedict Groeschel addressed the students of Cardinal Newman School during a mid-day assembly March 11. Approximately 500 students, along with faculty, staff and parents, heard the Franciscan Friar of the Renewal speak about the gross injustice of underpaying immigrants. He described this as one of the biggest sins that American society commits because of the lack of human dignity that is shown to immigrants.
Father Groeschel called for students to become advocates for fair wages. He said that Christians, especially Cath olics, should recognize that immigrants do not deserve any less for doing the same work as American citizens.
His visit to Cardinal Newman was made possible by Mary Nahigian, a parent who met him while on retreat.
Father Groeschel is an author, retreat master, psychologist, activist, and the host of “Sunday Night Live” on the Eternal Word Television Network, according to the Franciscan Friar’s Web site, www.franciscanfriars.com.
