Daughters of Charity Sister Mary Eugene Monaldo dies at 78

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Sister Mary Eugene Monaldo, former provincial secretary of the Emmitsburg Province of the Daughters of Charity, died May 5 at Villa St. Michael, the province’s retirement residence. She was 78.

The Mass of Christian burial was held May 9 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Born Anna Monaldo, she was a daughter of the late Biagio and Caterina Monaldo.  Her family lived in St. Gabriel parish in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1948 and entered the community of the Daughters of Charity in December of that year, taking the name Sister Mary Eugene.

Sister Mary Eugene earned a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1965 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., and a master’s degree in business education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1971.

Sister Mary Eugene’s teaching career included schools in Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. From 1969-1971, she taught business at Bishop England High School in Charleston, S.C. She was voted “Teacher of the Year” in 1977.

During her 59 years as a Daughter of Charity, she served in many capacities, including local superior, business manager and administrative assistant.

Sister Mary Eugene also served as  administrator of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, secretary for the Emmitsburg Province and as assistant to the local superior at Villa St. Michael. In 2005, she was sent to Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md., to serve as the local superior pro tem.  Sister was injured in a fall and returned to Villa St. Michael.

She also served as a member of the Providence Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees.

Sister Mary Eugene is survived by sisters Veronica McDonald of Winchester, Va., and Elisabeth Carroll of Springfield, Va., and her community.
