Sister M. Georgene Luther, of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius, dies at 86.

DANVILLE, PENNSYVLANIA—Sister M. Georgene Luther, of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius, died at Maria Hall on March 31. She was 86.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 6 at Maria Hall.

She was born Anna Mary Luther in Bridgeport, a daughter of the late George and Mary Vaszily Luther. She attended Mother of Sorrows School in Bridgeport and graduated from St. Matthew High School, Conshohocken. She received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in education from Marywood University in Scranton, and did graduate work at Sacred Heart Institute and Fairfield and Fordham Universities.

She entered the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Danville on Oct. 3, 1946, was received as a novice on Aug. 13, 1947, and professed her vows on Aug. 11, 1949.

Sister Georgene taught all the grades from kindergarten to eighth in parish schools in Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. She served as local coordinator for seven years and as principal for 10 during her career in education. She also taught piano and conducted children’s choirs. She taught religious education in high school programs and instructed youths preparing to receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and confirmation. After her retirement from full-time ministry, she cared for her aged parents and then became a teaching assistant at St. Cyril Preschool and Kindergarten in Danville. She retired to Maria Hall in 2009.

Sister Georgene is survived by a sister, Mrs. John Moran, of Collegeville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
