GREENVILLE—Sister Kathleen Moroney celebrated her 65th anniversary as a Sister of Bon Secours with a gathering of friends and family at the Monastery of St. Clare in Travelers Rest.
Sister Kathleen was born in County Limerick, Ireland, in 1933, the second of four children.
She met the sisters of Bon Secours when she was 8 years old and they sowed the seed of her vocation.
“We invited the sisters to our home each week; my mother served hot scones and tea. She was delighted to have them in our home,” Sister Kathleen said.
She entered the order in 1950 on the Feast of the Little Flower, to whom she has a great devotion. She graduated from nursing school in 1956 and took final vows in 1958. After serving in nursing for 28 years in Ireland, she came to Charleston to study. She returned to Ireland, began the process of becoming a member of the U.S. province in 1995 and earned certification as a chaplain.
Her first mission was in Florida. In 2007, Sister Kathleen went to Greenville and served her chaplaincy at St. Francis Eastside. Since retiring, she volunteers and serves as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to patients at Eastside.
“I thank God every day for giving me the health and energy to continue His work,” she said. “I will continue on as long as God wants me.”
