Deacon Joseph Anonie, Marine veteran, dies at 73

CHARLESTON—Deacon Joseph Alfred Anonie, who served at Immaculate Conception Church in Goose Creek, died on July 19. He was 73.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held July 24 at Immaculate Conception and burial was in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Deacon Anonie was born on Sept. 7, 1941, on Staten Island, N.Y., a son of William and Margaret Anonie. He grew up in New Jersey and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1959. He served in the Bay of Pigs conflict and was honorably discharged in 1963. Deacon Anonie settled in Charleston, where he met his wife of 53 years, Carolyn F. Caughman Anonie. He was a devoted deacon in the Church for 36 years.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Carolyn Lagarenne, Audrey Murphy, Dennis Anonie and David Anonie; a brother, Bill Anonie; and a sister, Kathy Anonie Savage; and eight grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
