COLUMBIA—Deacon Charles Patton Poole Jr., a retired deacon for St. Joseph Church and a former physics professor at the University of South Carolina, died on Nov. 1. He was 88.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 5 at St. Joseph Church with burial in St. Peter Church cemetery.
Deacon Poole was born June 7, 1927, in Panama City, Panama, a son of the late Charles Patton Poole and Irene Hackett Poole.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-medicine from Fordham University in 1950, and a Master of Science in physics in 1952. He earned his doctorate in solid state physics from the University of Maryland.
His career included designing microwave components for radar at Westinghouse, and helping to design an electron spin resonance spectrometer which he used in the related field of nuclear magnetic resonance at the Gulf Oil Research Center in Pittsburgh, Penn.
During his lifetime, Deacon Poole published 150 research articles and numerous books in his field.
He is survived by five children, Kathleen Poole, Charles Patton Poole III, Michael Poole, Mary Ellen Jackson, and Elizabeth Loeffler; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
