ANDERSON—Luciana Strathern, an eighth-grade student at St. Joseph School, was named as a semifinalist in the 2016 South Carolina National Geographic State Bee to be held April 1 in Columbia. She is the daughter of Dr. David and Kari Strathern.
This is the ninth year in a row that a St. Joseph student has qualified to compete in the state competition. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 28th year. First, school bees are held throughout the state to determine each school champion, who then takes an online qualifying test. The National Geographic Society invites up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state bees.
Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic book “The National Parks: An Illustrated History” and a medal, and will compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship in Washington, D.C., in May.
Also, the St. Joseph Beta Club planted a vegetable garden on the school grounds and recently harvested their first crop, which they donated to the Anderson Emergency Soup Kitchen.
