COLUMBIA—Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone conferred the ministry of lector on 19 men studying to become permanent deacons during the Rite of Admission Mass held Sept. 17 at Our Lady of the Hills Church. Two members of the group also received the ministries of candidacy and acolyte. The ministry of lector allows the men to proclaim the word of God in Catholic liturgies.
After the Mass, members of the ordination class of 2017 were awarded their Master’s in Theology or undergraduate certificates from St. Leo University. Deacon André Guillet, director of the diaconate program for the Diocese of Charleston, said the program is alive and growing, and pastors seem to be very pleased with the quality of education the candidates have received.
Miscellany/Nic Pilch: Candidates for the ministry of lector come up two at a time to place their hands on the Bible as Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone confers the ministry of lector on them.
