FLORENCE—St. Anthony School won the “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” competition in their age bracket in Columbia recently.
The contest is an in-depth study of American history with an emphasis on understanding the formation of the Constitution and its interpretation throughout history. Students participated in a mock congressional hearing and discussed critical issues regarding American government, the founding fathers and current events based on a constitutional perspective. It is sponsored by the S.C. Bar Law Related Education Division.
The win marks St. Anthony’s first state title in the competition. Participating students included Brook Brumfield, Nick Gartung, Michael Manelli, Tanner Meekins, Kyle Pham, Blake Rogers, Caroline Smith, Andrew Spence, Robert Spence, Daniel Tilton and Rileigh Yearsich. Their teacher and coach was Patti Odom.
“We are so proud of our eighth-grade students and Mrs. Odom, our social studies teacher, for all of their hard work in preparing for such a prestigious and thorough competition,” said Tracy Hamner, principal.
