COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Fellowship of Bishops, representing 800,000 baptized Christians in the state, held an advocacy day at the Statehouse recently. Representatives from several Christian denominations spoke on behalf of quality of education to convince legislators to invest tax dollars and raise incentives to improve the quality of education in our state, according to a press release.
Their emphasis was: funding teacher salaries, which would help recruit and retain highly competent teachers; budgeting to improve technology in all districts, but particularly the most needy; and encouraging consolidation and collaboration among districts for equitable sharing of resources. Participants were asked to remind everyone that the state has never adequately funded the cost required to educate one child for one year.
